Taste Test: Ice cream sandwiches

We’re about a month shy of National Ice Cream Sandwich Day but right up against the belly of our nation’s birthday — not to mention it’s high season for locally made frozen treats. So we figured a taste test was in order.

We rounded up 17 samples from bakeries, grocery stores, specialty shops and a food truck. This was a blind tasting; judges rated cookies and ice cream separately (on a scale of 1 to 5) and gave an overall score.

The winner — from the executive chef for Cork Wine Bar and Restaurant and its nearby Cork Market — made us swoon. Kristin Hutter swirls a luscious house-made caramel sauce into a subtle, creamy house-made banana ice cream that’s sandwiched between outstanding house-made peanut butter cookies.

“I get to taste flavors she comes up with, so I have the best job,” says co-owner Diane Gross. Cork’s ice cream sandwiches are a summer-only dessert, and the winning ’wich has been offered since the summer of 2011.
